Designing solutions with augmented intelligence | Dell EMC Forum Talk | New Delhi
September 15 @ 4:00 pm - 4:30 pm
A talk by Parthajeet at the Dell EMC Forum | New Delhi
Machines are taking over our lives and yeah sure, the power of AR and AI is awesome. But that power will pale in comparison with the power of a partnership between humans and machines. Through mankind’s history, the basis of man’s progress has been with a partnership; it never has been and never will be a ‘either humans or machines’ scenario.
Design as a field of study has increasingly being appreciated as a tool to solve problems, over its aesthetic contributions, giving birth to ‘design thinking’. In design schools, students are taught to find solutions using the dictum “Function over form”. When we leave design to machines, they work primarily from this standpoint; for example, when we let them design and print houses, we may end up living in buildings that are just grey boxes. As we make further advancements, ‘internet of things’ sensors can teach machines how humans interact with their surroundings to learn how different people what different things in terms of function. This will pave the way for humans to balance function with form — future designers are likely to spend more time on the art and less on the details, as cognitive partnerships between man and machines are forged.
Augmented intelligence is far more powerful than artificial intelligence. 85 percent of the jobs in 2030 haven’t yet been invented, and a large chunk of such jobs will centre around augmented intelligence. Designers will adapt to newer ways to solving problems and to newer jobs as well, for machines automate activities, not jobs.
